The Blue Drawing Room has had many purposes over the years since the 1740s, including billiard room, manuscript room, and classroom. Today, it is restored as the Blue Drawing Room, maintaining its beautiful Victorian design since the 1860s. It takes its name from the stunning blue silk damask on the walls, and along with the gilded ceiling, the room recalls the elegant period under the 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos.
Exquisitely decorated by Vincenzo Valdrè, is truly one of the jewels of Stowe’s interiors. One of the key public rooms of the main mansion under the dukes, this highly decorated room from the 1780s depicts beautiful wall paintings, based on those rediscovered in Pompeii in the 1740s. The central neo-classical ceiling painting and elegant chandelier finishes off this unique 18th century entertaining room. Like all of Stowes State Rooms, it offers wonderful views of the South Front vista.
Forming the ‘wow’ factor at the heart of Stowe House, the stunning Marble Saloon dates from the 1780s and is distinctively recognisable for its oval shape.
Creating the centre of the State Rooms, the four doorways in and out point to the four compass points, while the busy frieze above depicts a Roman celebration of victorious battle. Taking its name after the magnificent floor, comprised of over seventy four-foot squares of Massa Carrara marble, the Marble Saloon is Stowe’s most breathtaking room and is the perfect space for your event, be it a wedding, dinner, or party.
Also known as the State Drawing Room, the newly restored Temple Room glitters with its beautiful gilded ceiling and orange and silver shot wall covering. Originally built as an after-dinner (withdrawing) room, it later held the family’s celebrated painting collection, including pictures by Titian, Rembrandt and Rubens. These have been replaced by stately portraits of the Dukes’s family.
The State Dining Room has seen many a luxurious dinner for Royalty, including Queen Victoria in 1845, and Elizabeth II, in 2008. The highly decorated ceiling depicts mythical animals as Venus adorns the central panels. The magnificent windows look over breath-taking views of the South Front, Corinthian Arch and Octagon Lake and fill the room with natural light whatever time of the year.
Offering magnificent views of the Octagon Lake and the Corinthian Arch the South Lawns are the perfect setting for outdoor filming.
